On a Train Heading South, ODC Dance San Francisco
On a Train Heading South was commissioned by ODC Dance in collaboration with choreographer Brenda Way and designer Alex Nichols. A cautionary tale about our own natures and the nature that sustains us, the piece explores media saturation and human inattention to climate change, by embedding found media fragments, political speech and environmental field recordings within the texture of a chamber music composition.
The Cassandra-like central character in the choreographed work struggles to gain the attention of a crowd of party-goers. The set is an arc of twelve blocks of ice suspended over a silver floor - a double-edged vision of loveliness and self-absorption. The ice blocks melt throughout the performance - an aural and visual component of the half hour piece.
